What Boots to Wear With Black Sweater Dress
We all know I'm a sucker for sweater weather. I mean, I talk about it all the time, and you've seen me wear a ton of my favorite here on Poor Little It Girl and on my Instagram/Stories. I mean, that's what the season is about, right? Getting cozy in your favorite knit and sipping pumpkin spice lattes, of course! Who's with me? (Actually, I need a new Starbucks fall drink to love so if you have suggestions, send me a DM on Instagram!)
But today, we're expanding my love for the sweater and we're going to be talking all about the sweater dress. I love wearing sweater dresses during the fall, as it's a great way to keep warm but also feel a little bit more dressed up. And my favorite way to style a great sweater dress is with a classic pair of boots.

How To Wear A Sweater Dress With Boots
I think the first tip has to be to know your proportions. I'm petite, so I can't really do a shapeless sweater dress and high over the knee boots. My entire body would be lost and I'd look even shorter than I am, which is almost impossible to do, ha! Sure I'm all about embracing being short, but I still want to give the appearance that I'm taller than I am in real life. So while I love sweater dresses, I have to be mindful of which style I pick for my body type.
My general rule of thumb is to find a sweater dress that hits right at or above the knee. So that way, when you wear your boots, either ankle or tall boots, you're able to still show some leg to give you length. I could easily add opaque black tights (these are my absolute favorite!) to this sweater dress and ankle suede boot combo to create the same illusion of length and height. I want to draw the eye up and create a long line.
Different Types of Sweater Dresses
For today's look, I'm wearing an easy shift style dress. First and foremost, any knit dresses I pick have to be soft on my skin. No one wants to be itchy all day just for the sake of a fashion trend, absolutely not! There's no defined waist and it goes away from my body slightly as it goes down. I feel like this is the style people associate with sweater dresses the most. Basically, it looks like a normal sweater you'd wear with jeans in fall or winter, but just a longer hemline.
But did you know there are a ton of other types of sweater dresses? From A-line, mini, midi, fit and flare, cable knit, and belted – there's a bunch of options out there! No matter your body type or height, they make sweater dresses for everyone. Here are a few styles to check out:
Different Types of Boots To Wear With A Sweater Dress
There are so many different styles of boots to wear with sweater dresses. I personally love a great ankle bootie like I'm wearing in today's look. These black boots are my go-to! It's a classic leather boots style that comes up a little higher on my ankle but still shows some leg before hitting the hemline of my dress. I love how Southern Curls & Pearls, Pink Peonies, and Alicia Tenise styled it similar to me with their short boots as well.
But, if you're of "normal" height or taller, I totally suggest trying a cute tall or over-the-knee boot with your sweater dress! I love how Julia Berolzheimer, Little Blonde Book, and Life With Emily did this in their looks. Riding boots or knee-high boots are also great taller options to try with your own sweater dress outfits. Maybe if I did a shorter sweater dress I could pull this off too…guess that means I get to shop some more, huh! Speaking of shopping, here are some fun boots to try out with your sweater dresses too:
